The Embedding Financial Empowerment into Healthcare committee, a working group of the Manitoba Financial Empowerment Network, is conducting a survey to see what financial help services (tax filing, benefit navigation, access to identification support, financial literacy) are currently happening in the healthcare system. Poverty and financial instability are well‑recognized social determinants of health and can significantly impact patients’ health outcomes, access to care, and overall well‑being. Healthcare workers often play a critical role in addressing these challenges by providing financial help services, resources, referrals, or advocacy as part of their daily work. We are interested to know where this work has already been embedded or being done in an ad-hoc manner.
Your survey responses will be used to create a map of services currently happening within the healthcare system that can be used to:
determine interventions that have success,
where there are opportunities to scale work that is being done,
where there are gaps in services,
for accessible information for making referrals
Contact information will only be shared if you complete that portion of the survey. The survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
Embedding Financial Help Services into Healthcare Working Group has been established as a working group of the Manitoba Financial Empowerment Network (MFEN).
Expand the scale and scope of financial help services in health care settings;
Achieve positive policy and institutional change to address barriers.
Recognizing that financial wellbeing is a determinant of health, the committee will work to increase access to financial help services within healthcare systems for financially vulnerable Manitobans. These services include access to identification, tax filing, financial coaching/counselling, and access to benefits and income supports programs. This will be achieved through:
Grounding our work in the priorities identified by lived experience experts
Identifying promising practices and service delivery models for the provision of financial help services in health care settings
Supporting the replication and scaling of promising practices and service delivery models
Developing and evaluating the effectiveness of innovative approaches to embedding financial empowerment services based on best practices
Securing resources to support enhanced financial help service delivery
Engaging in joint knowledge mobilization and problem-solving sessions
Working with community organizations and across systems to address gaps in service provision
Supporting positive policy and institutional change to address barriers
